Ida Lowe Winner

Ida Bernice Lowe Winner, 96, of Springfield, IL and formerly of Virginia, IL died Monday, February 6, 2012 at her son’s residence in Springfield.

She was born May 8, 1915 in rural Virginia, IL; the daughter of Richard Colson and Gertrude Ovilette Caywood Lowe. She married Layton Winner on December 27, 1940 in Bowling Green, MO and he preceded her in death on January 7, 1996.

She is survived by a son, Ronald Winner of Springfield; a sister, Rachel Leona Lowe Norton of Springfield; several nieces and nephews including Martin Borman (wife, Kathy) of Jacksonville, Vauhnee Borman Baptist of Charleston, Ken Norton of Sandusky, OH, Bob Chapman (wife, Lynda) and David Chapman (wife, Anne), both of Bluffs, Keith Chapman (wife, Carol) of Festus, MO, Barbara Chapman of Jacksonville, Alma Traver (husband, Dick) of Washington, and Joyce Atnip (husband, Pete) of Murrayville; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara Elizabeth Lowe and Josephine Lucille Lowe Borman.

Mrs. Winner was a 1933 graduate of Virginia High School and was previously employed at Wagner’s Restaurant in Jacksonville, S.S. Kresge in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and as a clothing inspector at Camp Ellis, IL. She retired from the office of the Illinois Secretary of State where she worked with the drivers license master files and vehicle titles. She was a loving farm wife and mother who cherished her role as a homemaker. She also enjoyed the outdoors, travel experiences, and caring for the family cats, Whiskers and Lucky.

Funeral services will be held 12:45 PM Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm Thursday. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Virginia Memorial Public Library, the Animal Protective League of Springfield, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
