Helen Patterson Hinde

Helen Patterson Hinde, 88, of Jacksonville, IL died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at her residence.

She was born December 8, 1923 in Jacksonville; the daughter of Ray and Florence Olson Patterson. She married John W. Hinde on December 9, 1950 at Smith House on the Illinois College campus in Jacksonville and he survives. She is also survived by a son, John P. Hinde of Kirkwood, MO.

Mrs. Hinde was a 1941 graduate of Jacksonville High School and a 1945 graduate of Illinois College. She received a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1946. She worked in the field of journalism and provided public relations expertise to Anderson-Clayton Foods and Passavant Area Hospital. She served as an instructor in English and Writing at both MacMurray and Illinois College. In addition, she served as a farm manager for her family farm.

Helen was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Sorosis Literary Society, and Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library. She was a member and past president of the League of Women Voters and was a long-time member and secretary of the Ladies Education Society. She also served two terms on the Jacksonville District #117 Board of Education. In her spare time, Helen was devoted to landscaping and gardening having completed the University of Illinois Extension Service’s Master Gardener Class.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held 1:30 pm, Thursday, August 2, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville where the family will meet friends following the services. Private family committal services will be conducted at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Ladies Education Society, Illinois College, or Jacksonville Public Library.
