Johnnie B. McClure

Johnnie B. McClure, 89, of Petersburg, IL and formerly of Mt. Sterling, IL died Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in rural Petersburg.

He was born May 7, 1923 in Cass County, IL; the son of Lewis Harrison and Edith Miller McClure. He married Dorothy E. Hinds on August 15, 1951 in Pigott, AR and she preceded him in death on September 15, 1992.

He is survived by a daughter, Yvonne Crow (husband, John Wallace) of Clarksville, TN; a son, John W. McClure of Mt. Sterling; six grandchildren, Jerry Clark of Clarksville, TN, Jeremy Clark (wife, Nichole) of Greenbrier, AR, Miranda Nicole McClure of Meredosia, Alexandria McClure of Mt. Sterling, Katherine Virginia Crow of Clarksville, TN, and Jessica Brown of Meredosia; several great grandchildren; six siblings, Melissa Cox and Mary Guffey, both of Virginia, Deanie Chapman and Louis McClure, both of Springfield, Ellen Reeves of Griggsville, and Sue Cox (husband, Ron) of Lebanon, MO; several nieces and nephews; and a long-time friend and companion, Mildred Hinds of Petersburg. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and James Harrison McClure.

As a teenager, Mr. McClure served with the Civilian Conservation Corps assisting in the rebuilding of New Salem State Park and other projects. He later trained horses, worked as a farm hand, and was employed at Virginia Packing Company until its closure. He retired following several years of service with Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville. During retirement, he enjoyed spending his winters at Silver Springs, FL.

Graveside funeral services will be held 10:00 am Thursday, August 2, 2012, at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. The family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia. A reception following the graveside service will be held at the home of Nathan and Chris Cox, 21791 Garner Rd., Virginia, IL. Memorial gifts are suggested to Menard County Senior Transportation.
