RUTH K. WADE
November 19, 2008

Ruth Laurel Kilton Wade, 94, of Jacksonville, IL died Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.

She was born July 30, 1914 in Christian County, IL; the daughter of Emory Judson Jeanetta Lemmon Kilton. She married J. Merle Wade on February 12, 1943 in Christian County, IL and he survives.

She was the last of her immediate family and is survived by several cousins.

A 1939 graduate of Illinois College, Mrs. Wade taught school for over 25 years, the majority of her career with Jacksonville School District #117. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi, and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was honored by Illinois College with the Distinguished Service Citation in 1989.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 21, 2008 at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home (West State Chapel) in Jacksonville with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. There will be no formal visitation but friends may call from 10:00 AM Friday until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the J. Merle and Ruth K. PAUL M. BAKER
November 14, 2008

Paul McCoy Baker Jr., 89, of Jacksonville, IL died Friday, November 14, 2008 at Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.

He was born August 27, 1919 in Clarksburg, WV; the only child of Paul M. Sr. and Eugenia Virginia Kenney Baker. He married Lola J. Criss on June 20, 1941 in Petersburg, Virginia and she survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Sharon A. Billingsley (husband, Larry) of Raytown, MO and Kathryn S. Stafford (husband, Eddie) of Jacksonville; three grandchildren; three step grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and four step great grandchildren.

Mr. Baker was a graduate of Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg, WV. He proudly served from 1941 to 1945 in the US Army during WW II with the US Cavalry’s 29th Battalion and as a part of the occupation forces in Japan and the Philippines.

He retired following many years associated with Home Lumber and Supply Company of Ashland, Kansas. An avid golfer and talented artist, Mr. Baker was interested in a variety of the fine and graphic arts. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland, KS where he formerly served as a trustee and elder.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date. Military honors and interment will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association. VERA C. RITZO
November 14, 2008

Vera C. Ritzo of Jacksonville, died in her sleep Nov. 14, 2008, at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville, at age 100.

Mrs. Ritzo was active her entire life, living independently until age 99. She loved to read and play cards to keep her mind active. She also enjoyed sewing, embroidery and spending time with family. She had an extraordinary memory and loved to share the remarkable stories spanning her long life with everyone around her.

Vera was born May 29, 1908, in Fort Pierre, S.D., to James and Celia Callahan. She worked for the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, before marrying Charles J. Ritzo on Aug. 18, 1941, in Lincoln, Neb. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Mr. and Mrs. Ritzo were sent to Hawaii where they worked for the Department of the Navy. They returned to Lincoln, Neb., after the war where they lived until retiring to Alamo, Texas. Mr. Ritzo preceded her in death on Jan. 31,1983. Mrs. Ritzo traveled and lived in many places including Hot Springs, Ark., and Springfield and Jacksonville, Ill.

She is survived by two sons, Timothy (wife, Marita) and Daniel, both of Jacksonville; two grandsons, Christopher (wife, Samantha) of Urbana and David of St. Louis; one granddaughter, Elise Meyer (husband, Larry) of Jacksonville; one great-grandson, Aiden Meyer; and many other extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home (North Prairie Chapel) in Jacksonville, on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. Family will greet friends following the memorial service from 6-8 p.m. Mrs. Ritzo's wish was to have her body donated to medical research. WILLIAM 'FAT' LYNN
November 13, 2008

William “Fat” Lynn, 86, of Virginia, IL died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Heritage Manor East in Beardstown, IL.

He was born September 1, 1922 in Cass County; the son of D. N. and Cleo Morgan Lynn. He married Frances E. Long on April 27, 1942 in Virginia, IL and she preceded in death on May 14, 2008.

He is survived by two sons, Mike Lynn (wife, Janet) of Virginia and Ron Lynn (companion, Sue Smith) of Virginia; five grandchildren, Billy Mike Lynn (wife, Shelly) of Virginia, Ann Iberg of Highland, Brent Lynn (wife, Amy) of Yukon, OK, Renee Richard (husband, Eric) of Ripley, OK, and Shawn Lynn of Ashland; eight great grandchildren, Cody and Bryce Iberg, Cooper Jack and Emma Rose Lynn, Kreas Rose Richard, Emma Katherine Lynn, Mason Tanner, and Lauren Fedderson; two sisters, Virgie McLeod of Savoy and Ina “Ginger” Erickson (husband, Douglas) of Santa Barbara, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Lynn; two brothers, Norman and Francis “Tiny” Lynn; and two sisters, Nellie Gentry and Crystal Downs.

Mr. Lynn was a life long farmer in Cass County and a member of the Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau. He assisted with numerous 4-H projects.

Graveside services will be held 11:45 AM Monday, November 17, 2008 at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. MILDRED L. DANIEL
November 8, 2008

Mildred L. “Millie” Daniel, 68, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born Nov. 3, 1940, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Warren Keith and Rose Devarose Daniel, Sr.

She is survived by one brother, Warren K. (Caroline) Daniel, Jr. of Chapin; two nieces, Cheryl (Sean) Bolton of Jacksonville and Deedee Ann (Drew) Headley of Pinson, AL.; five great nieces and nephews, Samantha Clardy, Zachary Bolton, Alysan Wayman, Alex Headley and Josh Headley.

Ms. Daniel was a 1958 graduate of Jacksonville High School. After graduation she worked for Woolworth’s until it closed, then for Colwell Lumber until its closing, and later for K-Mart until it closed. She then worked for Complete Care in Pittsfield, retiring to care for her great-nephew, Zachary. She had been a member of Jacksonville Family Campers and Jacksonville C.B. Club. She enjoyed needlework. She also enjoyed her nieces and nephews, helping people, and was an anchor to all who knew her.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie Street in Jacksonville, with burial at Jacksonville East Cemetery. ROBERT I. BRAND
November 6, 2008

Robert I. Brand, 83, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, November 6, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born October 25, 1925, in Kewanee, the son of Hubert and Sylvia Lippens Brand. On June 8, 1950, he married June Reid in Jacksonville and
she survives.

Mr. Brand is also survived by a daughter, Roberta “Bobbie” Jane Westergaard, her husband Wayne, and two grandchildren, Benjamin Michael and Nicole Marie Westergaard, all of Newell, Iowa. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and James.

Mr. Brand attended schools in Kewanee where he was active in all major sports. He served during World War II as a radar man in the United States Navy aboard the USS Little DD803. Mr. Brand received a BA Degree from Illinois College where he was a member of Sigma Pi Literary Society. While at Illinois College, Mr. Brand was on the football team for 4 years, the golf team for 1 year, and the baseball for 2 years. During his college football career, he earned 4 letters and served as the captain of the football team during his senior year. He then received a Masters Degree of Education from the University of Illinois.

Mr. Brand served as a teacher, coach, and administrator in area schools including Sinclair, Chapin, Franklin, White Hall Junior High and Triopia Junior High and Grade Schools. For many years, Mr. Brand served as a registered official in football, basketball, and baseball.

Mr. Brand has been a member of the Jacksonville Elks Lodge #682 since 1952. He assisted Spike Wilson with the organization of the local Elks Youth Baseball program. He continued to umpire the program’s games for 33 years and also reorganized the program into its present form of boys and girls baseball.

Mr. Brand started the local Elks “Hoop Shoot” free throw program and served as local director for 12 years. He also served as West Central District Director of the “Hoop Shoot” program for 2 years (1995 and 1996). On the state level, he served as “Hoop Shoot” director for 11 years. For these efforts and his service as youth activities chairman on local and district levels, he received the Illinois Elk of the Year recognition in 1988-1989.

Mr. Brand was a past president of the Morgan County Teacher’s Association and of the Jacksonville Symphony Society. Mr. Brand was very involved with education issues serving as an Illinois Education Association delegate who supported legislation to improve teachers’ pensions and survivor benefits. He also was chairman of the committee to rewrite the Illinois Education Bylaws.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 10, 2008 at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie Street in Jacksonville, with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. JACKSON D. TAYLOR
November 6, 2008

Jackson D. “Jack” Taylor, 71, of Jacksonville, IL died Thursday, November 6, 2008 at Jacksonville Convalescent Center in Jacksonville.

He was born January 30, 1937 in Anna; the son of William and Dolly Kathleen Crestman Taylor. He married Christina Wilson in 1967 at Canton, IL and she survives.

He is also survived by a daughter, Ann Moreno (husband, Roque) of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Roque Moreno Jr. And Ramona Moreno; a great granddaughter, Meliana Delvalle; several brothers and sisters including, Robin Taylor, Elizabeth “Lisa” Timmons, Jeneanne Marble, Marsha Harper, Madonna Griffith, Robert Taylor, Peter Taylor, William Taylor, and Ernest Taylor; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Linda Peterson.

Mr. Taylor served with the US Air Force from 1956 to 1960. He was a brick layer and auto mechanic in Canton prior to becoming disabled.

HARVEY E. REYNOLDS
November 6, 2008

Harvey E. Reynolds, 85, of Jacksonville died Thursday, November 6, 2008 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Peru, IL.

He was born June 4, 1923 in Bradford, IL; the son of T. Wood and Lillie Hash Reynolds. He married Wanda Votsmier in August of 1966 and she survives.

Mr. Reynolds served with the US Army during WWII and was employed many years as a lineman for telephone and cable television contractors.

WILLIAM THOMAS CRADDOCK
November 1, 2008

William Thomas Craddock, 85, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, November 1, 2008, at Jacksonville Convalescent Center.

He was born Apr. 21, 1923, in Jacksonville, the son of William J. and Margaret Dyer Craddock. He married Emily Zimmer on June 19, 1947, in Jacksonville and she survives.

He is also survived by one son and one daughter, William Craddock of Jacksonville and Christine Marie Owens of Springfield; three grandchildren and one great-grandson; and one brother, Allen (Lorraine) Craddock of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by one brother in infancy.

Mr. Craddock was a 1940 graduate of Routt High School. He was a member of Church of Our Saviour. He was also a member of Local #137 of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union and a life member of V.F.W. Post #1379. He was a World War II veteran of the Army, serving in Africa, Italy, the Philippines and Japan. He enjoyed gardening, and was involved with the Farmer’s Market for many years.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie Street in Jacksonville, with burial at Calvary Cemetery. R. ALVIN MARSHALL
November 1, 2008

R. Alvin Marshall, 93, of Jacksonville, IL died Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born November 24, 1914 in Jacksonville; the son of A. Wesley and Grace Ranson Marshall. He married Thelma Allan on March 29, 1939 in Jacksonville and she preceded in death on January 4, 1998.

He is survived by a son, Richard Marshall (wife, Ann McEntee) of Wilson, NC; five nieces; and a nephew.

Mr. Marshall was a 1933 graduate of Jacksonville High School and attended Brown’s Business College from 1937-1938. He served with the US Navy from 1943 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater during WW II and later worked as a salesman for Noudett Sporting Goods from 1946 to 1949. He joined Walker Hardware in 1950 where he served as manager for many years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of Central Christian Church, the former Jacksonville Rifle Club, and Easy Riders Bicycle Club. He enjoyed target shooting, bicycle riding and photography.

HARLAN O. MASON
October 31, 2008

Harlan O. Mason, 78, of rural Jacksonville, IL passed away Friday morning, October 31, 2008 at the Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.

He was born November 17, 1929 at the family home in rural Jacksonville; the son of Henry and Edith Stewart Mason. He married Barbara JoAnn Benson on October 26, 1952 at Central Christian Church in Jacksonville and she survives.

He is also survived by his daughter, Jan Mills (husband, Brad) of Jacksonville; his son, Harlan Andrew “Andy” Mason (wife, Delores) of rural Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Melanie Mills, Amy Mills, Kelsey Mason, and Cody Mason; a sister, Mildred Mason Kent (husband, Warrington) of Webster Groves, MO; a brother, John R. Mason (wife, Donna) of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Homer L. Mason (surviving wife, Liz of Glenview, IL).

Harlan was raised on the family farm west of Jacksonville and graduated from Jacksonville High School with the Class of 1947. He served with the US Navy stationed at Great Lakes Naval Academy prior to returning home to pursue a degree from Brown’s Business College.

He began a farming career in his late twenties with his father and continued until his retirement. He was a member of Central Christian Church, Jacksonville Lions Club, Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau, and formerly served as a 4-H leader. An avid life-long Chicago Cubs fan, he also enjoyed participating in church league softball.

Harlan was a quiet, soft-spoken family man. His passions were his family, faith, and farming. He was sincere, loving, hard-working, compassionate and loyal. During the early years of his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling. He was held with high regard and admiration by all who knew him, and he will be sorely missed.

A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, November 3, 2008 at Central Christian Church in Jacksonville. Graveside committal services will be held 9:30 AM Monday at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 2:00 PM Sunday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on West State Street in Jacksonville where the family will meet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. OTTO WILLIAM SCHUMM
October 30, 2008

Otto William “Bud” Schumm, 92, of Tucson, AZ. and formerly of Jacksonville, died Thursday, October 30, 2008 in Tucson.

He was born Sept. 17, 1916 in Jacksonville, the son of Otto and Margaret Lonergan Schumm. He married Sarah “Sally” Catherine Crowe and she preceded him in death in 1990, he then married Ann Felgar in 1992 and she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, O. William, Jr. of Fredericksburg, VA, and David Allen of Mountain Home, AR.; two stepsons, Dan and Jim Felgar, both of Arizona; one stepdaughter, Jean Burke of Colorado; three grandchildren, Tami Maghan, Greg Schumm and Veronica Kampelman; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen (Jack) Glisson of Jacksonville and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Jeanne in infancy; and three sisters, Margaret “Babe” Schumm, Frances Langdon and Anita “Kate” Watts.

Mr. Schumm was a 1934 graduate of Routt High School where he played on the basketball team that achieved statewide honors, and then received an accounting degree from Hardin Brown Business College. Bud began a career with the federal government as an auditor in 1941 and worked for several agencies for 32 years, most recently with the Dept. of Commerce. He was a former member of Church of Our Saviour and a member of Chapter 55 of the National Assn. of Retired Federal Employees and Knights of Columbus. Bud was an accomplished golfer and played the game throughout his long life. He had been living in Arizona since 1973, but always loved his hometown of Jacksonville and returned regularly for visits with his family and lifelong friends.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie Street in Jacksonville, with burial at Calvary Cemetery. A prayer service and Rosary will be held at 5:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Routt Catholic High School. SARAH JO TAYLOR
October 27, 2008

Sarah Jo Meek Garner Taylor, 88, of Jacksonville, died Monday, October 27, 2008 at Jacksonville Convalescent Center.
She was born March 26, 1920, near Selmer, TN., the daughter of Otto and Clara Mae Horton Meek. She married Herbert Garner and they divorced. She later married Robert W. Taylor, Sr. and he preceded her in death on October 16, 2006.

She is survived by one daughter, Pat L. (William) Hinegardner of Manchester; one stepson, Robert W. (Mary) Taylor, Jr. and one stepdaughter, Barbara (Craig) Bridgeman, both of Colorado Springs, CO.; one half-brother, Clark Edward (Delores) Smith of Jacksonville; five grandchildren, Bret (Shelly) Hinegardner of Manchester, Tracy L. (Greg) Severns of Bloomington, Terri Jo (David) Englund of Morton Grove, Tammy Sue (Allan) Casper of Jerome and Robbie L. Garner of McLean, VA.; four step grandchildren, Aaron and Jerard Bridgeman, Derek Taylor and Stacie Walton, all of Colorado Springs, CO.; six great-grandchildren; and several special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert L. Garner (surviving wife, Louise of Divernon).

Sarah Jo attended Lighthouse Community Church and was employed for thirty years with the Roodhouse Envelope Co., until retiring in 1984. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, traveling and taking the “river road”.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie St. in Jacksonville, with burial at Young Cemetery west of Glasgow.

GENE McGLAUCHLEN
October 26, 2008

Gene McGlauchlen, 65, of Arenzville, IL died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville, IL.

He was born August 9, 1943 in Jacksonville; the son of Charles Eldon and Mildred Peek McGlauchlen. He married Rita Marlene Smith on March 6, 1965 in Springfield, IL and later renewed his vows in the Catholic church on March 3, 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; a daughter, Marlena Sandahl Ayling (husband, Peter) and grandson, Jon, all of Enid, OK; a brother, Kenneth Clark McGlauchlen (wife, Cindi) of Eagen, MN; two sisters, Ann Marie Tardiff (husband, Dennis) of Woodson and Iva Christine Barnes (husband, Hal) of White Hall; and several nieces nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Kathy.

A 1961 graduate of Winchester High School, Gene worked in the grocery business since the age of 14, currently with the IGA in Beardstown. He previously worked with Carole Jean IGA in Jacksonville and the IGA in Winchester. He was well known and loved by the community and his co-workers. Over the years he operated several business, the last being Spatz’s Ice Cream store. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Gene enjoyed family, the outdoors, gardening, caring for the neighborhood wildlife, fishing and NASCAR. An accomplished artist, Gene did mainly commissioned art and had a love for fine art. Many of his vacations consisted of attending art seminars with his wife. He also loved to spend time with his pets, Holly and Carson.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial Mass will be held 11:30 AM Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends at the church from 10:30 AM Wednesday until the time of services. Memorial gifts are suggested to Church of Our Saviour. JEANNE FERGUSON
October 25, 2008

Jeanne Ferguson, 87, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008. at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

She was born Apr. 28, 1921, on her family’s farm in Lewistown, the daughter of John and Maude Wilson Clifford. She was married to Howard Hagaman and he preceded her in death. She later married Lynn “Fergy” Ferguson on May 11, 1968, and he preceded her in death on Apr. 18, 1998.

She is survived by one son, Jon Hagaman of Farmersville; two step-children, Rosemary (husband, Reg) Fellhauer of Waterloo and Stan Ferguson of Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren, Amber (husband, Craig) Harmon of Raymond, Bryan (wife, Tracey) Fellhauer of Elgin, Jennifer Jeralds of Batavia, Stan Ferguson, Jr. of Chicago and Heather (husband, Ross) Vittori of Arlington Heights; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Luft of Canton. She was preceded in death by one stepson, Jim Ferguson (surviving wife Linda of Elgin); and one sister, Jo Sosey.

Mrs. Ferguson had worked for Hamm’s Furniture and Irwin’s Clothing Store in Jacksonville. She enjoyed interior design, shopping and lunching with her friends.

Following cremation, graveside memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Woodwreath Cemetery east of Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Heartland Lions Eye Banks. Mildred E. “Millie” Waters, 91, of Jacksonville, IL died Friday, October 24, 2008 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

She was born February 2, 1917 in Morgan County, IL; the daughter of William H. And Lillie Mae Worrall Allan. She married George W. “Hap” Waters on June 18, 1941 in Jacksonville and he preceded in death on September 28, 1986.

She is survived by three daughters, Lillie Barton (husband, Terry) of Jacksonville, Roberta Goodall (husband, Gary) of Greenfield, and Edith Downs (husband, Glenn) of Wyoming; nine grandchildren, Shawn, Eddie, Amanda and Bobby Downs, all of Wyoming, Jeni Barton (fiancé, Joe Young) of Jacksonville, Christina Goodall (companion, Alex Mansfield) of Ceres, Katie (companion, Marc Gaines), Rachael and Abigail Goodall, all of Greenfield; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Marshall and Edna Mae Thompson, and two brothers, Charles and Robert Allan.

Mrs. Waters was employed at MacMurray College Dining Hall, Holkenbrink & Walton Grocery Store, Gustine Furniture, and Walker Hardware prior to retirement. She was a member of Central Christian Church, Rebekah Lodge #13, and a former member of the Town & Country Home Extension. She was a devoted volunteer at Prairieland Heritage Museum serving as President of its Ladies Auxiliary for several years.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on West State St. in Jacksonville with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. Helen F. Patterson, 89, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, at Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.

She was born April 21, 1919, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Charles E. and Emma McKinney Hadden. She married Clyde Patterson on April 12, 1941, in Jacksonville and he preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1960.

She is survived by one son and one daughter, Tom (wife, Margaret Prahl) Patterson of Custer, S.D. and Ellen (husband, Ray) Stocker of Arenzville; six grandchildren, Mike (wife, Bobbie) Stocker of Cheyenne, WY., Peggy (husband, Jeff) Westerfield of Jacksonville, Steven Stocker of Belleville, Jim (wife, Becky) Stocker of Arcadia, Sara Patterson of Springfield and Anne (husband, Lin) Boatwright of Chicago; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Sue Traylor; one son, David Patterson; two brothers, James E. and William L. Hadden; and one sister, Mary Hadden.

Mrs. Patterson was a 1937 graduate of Jacksonville High School. She was a longtime member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, and was currently a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. She had been a member of Arcadia Women’s Club and was a charter member of Morgan County Garden Club. She enjoyed flowers, being outdoors, and all animals, especially cats, dogs and her Black Angus cattle.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie Street in Jacksonville, with burial at Ebenezer Cemetery. Michael E. Penton, 56, of Beecher, IL and formerly of Jacksonville, IL died Tuesday night, October 21, 2008 at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

He was born March 8, 1952 in Eureka, CA; the son of James Carl and Margueriette Ellen Kinney Penton.

He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Graves (husband, Donald) of Beecher; a son, Timothy Penton of Beecher; two grandchildren, Morgan and Emily Graves; the mother of his children, Linda Hall Penton of Beecher; a brother, James A. Penton of South Jacksonville; and three sisters, Janet Deweese (husband, David) of Jacksonville, Tonya LeVeque (husband, Bobby) of Rochester, and Jerri Penton of Jacksonville.

Mr. Penton was formerly a welder for Thrall Rail Car Company and served with the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Private family services will be held at a later date with interment in Jacksonville East Cemetery. Norma B. Ivey, 93, of Lincoln, IL and formerly of Virginia, IL died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at St. Clara’s Manor in Lincoln.

She was born September 15, 1915 in Cass County; the daughter of Seth and Nora Thompson Williams. She married F. Dareld Ivey on November 25, 1937 in Maquoketa, IA and he preceded in death on June 16, 1989.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Reichert (husband, H. Gary) of Lincoln; two grandchildren, Heather Reichert of Carpentersville and Eric Reichert of Lincoln; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma Bennett and Glenna Williams, and two brothers, Ralph and Seth Eugene Williams.

A 1933 graduate of Virginia High School, Mrs. Ivey was employed at Trenter’s Grocery and Virginia Locker Company. She was a member of Virginia United Methodist Church and a 60 year member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Keith E. Seymour, 84, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born Dec. 23, 1923, south of Franklin, the son of Dwight E. and Georgia L. Lashmet Seymour. He married Alberta Hettick on May 24, 1947, in Jacksonville, and she survives.

He is also survived by two sisters and one brother, Norma Duncan of Carbondale, and Bette (Harold Lloyd) Clarkson and Fred L. Seymour, both of Godfrey. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister, Charles W. Seymour (surviving wife Edema of San Bernardino, CA.), H. Dean Seymour (surviving wife Ruth of Alton), H. Gene Seymour and Catherine Lawshe.

Mr. Seymour worked for the Postal Service for 28 years, retiring in 1980. He then worked part-time for Casler, Houser and Hutchison until 1988. He was a member of Central Christian Church, and a life member of Amvets, the V.F.W. and American Legion. He was also a member of Harmony Lodge #3 A.F. & A.M. and the Springfield Shrine Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie Street in Jacksonville, with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Clara Mae Bradshaw, 92, of Jacksonville, IL died Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.

She was born May 4, 1916 in Murrayville, IL; the daughter of F. Victor and Lula Mae Sweeney McAlister.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Ann Lawson (husband, Lawrence) of Tucson, AZ and Pat Manker of South Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Chris Trueblood (husband, Randy) of Tucson, AZ, Pam Lawson of Marana, AZ, Brad Manker of Chicago, and Tyson Manker of South Jacksonville; two great grandchildren, Dylan and Tori Hulland of Marana, AZ; a brother, George William “Bill” McAlister of Springfield; a niece; and a nephew. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Kevin Lawson.

Mrs. Bradshaw was a 1933 graduate of Jacksonville High School. She worked in the office at J. Capps and Sons for several years and later worked in the family business, B & M Floor Covering, for many years. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star.

Dorothy Louise Reining Lowe, 87, of Loraine, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

She was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Cass County, the daughter of Henry and Lottie Crews Reining. She married John William Lowe on Sept. 18, 1953, and he preceded her in death on June 20, 2004.

She is survived by two daughters and two sons, Diane (husband, Gale) Randall of Peoria, Russell Hall of Loraine, Paul Lowe of Las Vegas, NV. and Linda (husband, Jerry) Holder of Maryville, TN.; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; one sister, Emma Jane Fosha of Beardstown; and one brother, Irvin Reining of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by one son, Lonnie; and one brother, Clifford Reining.

Mrs. Lowe attended Cornerstone Gospel Assembly in Meredosia. She enjoyed singing and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Richard K. Penington, 68, of Meredosia, died Sunday, October 12, 2008 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born Jan. 18, 1940 in Macomb, the son of Chester and Nell Kemper Penington. He married Louise Wilson on Dec. 29, 1963 in Versailles and she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Rick Penington of Meredosia and Rob Penington of Iowa City, IA; and one sister, Vergene Corbitt of Macomb. He was preceded in death by one sister, Correnne Eden.

Mr. Penington was a graduate of Industry High School and Western Illinois University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era as a military policeman in the Panama Canal Zone from 1963-65. He then worked for A.B. Chrisman Fertilizer in Mt. Sterling and Meredosia for 32 years as a sales manager and Vice-President, retiring in 1997. He was a member of West Prairie Church near Industry, Rushville Masonic Lodge 9, Meredosia Kiwanis Club and American Legion Post 516. He enjoyed watching college and professional sports, especially football and baseball. He also took special interest in the local agricultural community.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Meredosia. Burial will be at Industry Cemetery with military rites. Glenn “G.B.” Williams, 85, of Jacksonville died Sunday, October 12, 2008 at his residence.

He was born Sept. 5, 1923 in Curran, the son of Glenn Frank Williams and Opal Flowers Williams McCombs. He married Joyce Samples on July 4, 1982 in Jacksonville and she survives.

He is also survived by five daughters and four sons, Marsha Chiles of Portland, ME., Brenda Ator of New Berlin, Steve (Karen) Williams of Bluffs, Gary Williams of Naples, Mike (Rita) Williams and Mark (Melanie) Williams, both of Bluffs, Terrie McGinness of Madison, MO., Tammy Williams of Ashland and Amy Williams of Murrayville; two step-children, Mary Long of Murrayville and Richard (Lisa) Jackson of Jacksonville; eleven grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bill Williams of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by one grandson, John Ator; and one sister, Dorothy Graves.

Mr. Williams was a graduate of Baylis High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific during WW II. While in the Navy he won several amateur golden gloves in boxing. He worked as a telegrapher and agent for the Wabash Railroad for thirteen years, before owning and operating Williams Tree Experts in Jacksonville. He was past Post commander of Bluffs American Legion 441. He enjoyed physical fitness activities, planting trees and flowers, flea markets and loved to deer hunt. He loved his dogs, Foo Man and Ernie, and his cats, Katie and Kelvin.

John V. Westberg, 87, of Jacksonville died Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born May 10, 1921, in Polk County, WI, the son of Herman Julius and Emma Louise Legrid Westberg. He married Joann Travis on Dec. 5, 1953, in Elmhurst and she survives.

He is also survived by one son, David (Emma) Westberg of Jacksonville; four daughters, Gail (Brian) Wells of Union, OH, Eileen (Thomas) Doyle of Jacksonville, Karen (John) Plunk of Creal Springs and Ann (Bill) Griswold of Forsyth; twenty grandchildren, Dana Olive (Ron) Briscoe, Monica Terwische, Bill Baulos, Terina Westberg, Thomas Baulos, Christina Wells (Pat) Bickley, John, Emma, and Kasey Wells, Katherine, Elizabeth, Mary, Colleen, Michael and Patrick Doyle, John and Julie Plunk, and Craig, Steven and Sherry Griswold; six great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Dallas, Austin and Houston Briscoe, Emma Rose Terwische and Elinor Paige Bickley; one brother, Raymond (Henrietta) Westberg of Citrus Heights, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Alcott Westberg.

Mr. Westberg was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Battle of the Bulge during WW II as a Paratrooper in the 101st Airborne. He was a 1952 graduate of Wisconsin Institute of Technology- Platteville. He worked for Homer L. Chastain & Associates in Decatur, Consumer Power Co. in Midland, MI, Construction Engineer for Casler, Houser and Hutchison in Jacksonville, and also as City Engineer in Farmington.

He was a member of Congregational Church, UCC in Jacksonville, Harmony Lodge #3, Shriners, Elks Lodge #682, Moose Lodge #865 and AMVETS. He also was Past Patron of Order of the Eastern Star, and served as Post Commander of both, V.F.W. Post #1379 and American Legion Post #279.

Mr. Westberg volunteered his time driving veterans to various VA Hospitals and coached Legion baseball for many years. He enjoyed traveling to American Legion Baseball World Series and loved watching sports and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie St. in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends following the service at the funeral home. Helen Louise Fargo of Bluffs was called to her eternal home on Oct. 4, 2008. She was born on Aug. 7, 1915, to Henry and Marie Meier Ellerman. She was the last member of her immediate family and her confirmation class of 1929.

She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Bluffs where she married Russell Fargo on Nov. 14, 1934. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1996, after 61 years of marriage.

Her surviving children are: Yvonne (Van) McCullough of Jacksonville, Burl (Thelma) Fargo of Bluffs, Betty (Karmy) Schone of Chapin and Ruth (Jim) Craig of Waverly. There are nine grandchildren, along with step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Devlin, two sisters, Marie Littig and Clara Middendorf, and one brother, Paul Ellerman.
Mrs. Fargo worked at Passavant Area Hospital for 10 years and 6 years as cook at the Bluffs school, retiring in 1976.

Friends may greet the family from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on West State Street in Jacksonville. Christian funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bluffs, where the body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Bernita Darlene Likes, 77, of Jacksonville and formerly of Bluffs, was called to her eternal home on Saturday morning, October 4, 2008, at her residence.

She was born November 8, 1930, on her parents farm near Bluffs, the daughter of Elba Earl and Laura Vortman Rahe. She was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Neelyville in 1944. She married James Danny Ray Likes on March 6, 1949, at Trinity Lutheran Church, and he preceded her in death on July 15, 2005, after 56 years of marriage.

Mrs. Likes is survived by two daughters, Brenda (husband Byron, Jr.) Berry of Carrollton and Judy (husband John III) Thousand of Highlands Ranch, CO.; four grandchildren, Matthew and Nadia Berry of Carrollton and John Thousand IV and Daniel Thousand of Highlands Ranch, CO; and a sister, Velma Louise Daub of Jacksonville.

Mrs. Likes was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Neelyville, and was currently a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. She graduated from Bluffs High School in 1948, and completed her course of study at Gem City Business College in Quincy. She was an active partner in managing and operating the family farm along with her husband. Mrs. Likes was an excellent seamstress and cook. She was a very caring person, and was dedicated to her family.

Nellie Mae Lerch Long, 87, of Bluffs, died Fri., Oct. 3, 2008, at Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.

She was born Feb. 28, 1921, near Chambersburg, the daughter of Andrew and Lola Stuller Lerch. She married Albert William Long on Apr. 20, 1938 in Louisiana, MO. and he preceded her in death on Apr. 30, 1975.

She is survived by two sons and one daughter, Roger William Long of Meredosia, Martha Grace Wheeler of Bluffs and David (wife, Judy) Long of Auburn; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Davis of Pontiac. She was preceded in death by four children, Lester Edward, Aretta Maxine, Chester Dale and Andrew Lee; three grandchildren, Cynthia Marie Long, James Lee Long and Andrew William Long; five sisters, Catherine Grace Long, Minnie Gertrude Easley, Elizabeth Bell Boker, Mary Brigendine and Lena Bentley Pruitt; and one brother, Charles Lerch.

Mrs. Long was a lifelong member of Chambersburg Christian Church, where she was active in Senior Saints. She worked as a nurses aide until her retirement. She loved to make sugar cookies with her grandchildren during the holidays. She enjoyed bingo, cards and dice, visiting with family and friends, and playing her pump organ, the accordion, electric organ and harmonica. She loved to work outside in her garden and with her flowers, and was an avid canner of her fruit and vegetables.

Harold Dean Megginson, 67, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Barton W. Stone Home.

He was born Nov. 18, 1940, in Jacksonville, the son of Roy and Irene Whiteman Megginson. He married Kay Jones on Nov. 19, 1983 and she survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Melissa Releford (boyfriend, Terry Ashbaker) and Cindy Tarrillion (boyfriend, Van Lester), both of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Amber, Amy and Joshua Releford, and Brandye, Austin and Aubrey Tarrillion, all of Jacksonville; and two nieces he had helped raise, Barbara (husband, Mark) Charles of Chatham and Jerrie Hunter of Murrayville. He was preceded in death by one sister, Peggy Fisher.

Mr. Megginson was a 1959 graduate of Jacksonville High School. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He had worked for J.Capps & Sons, then as a night manager at Eagle’s Groceries and later at Country Fair/County Market, retiring in 2003. Since 1997, he had also worked at the City Brush Drop-Off. He was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church where he sang on a regular basis. Harold was an avid bowler, bowling in many leagues for over 25 years. He enjoyed traveling and loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie Street in Jacksonville, with burial at Jacksonville East Cemetery. Robert L. Hamblin, 79, of Mt. Sterling, died Monday, September 29, 2008 at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born April 3, 1929, in Hudson, the son of Walter Lee and Pauline Butts Hamblin.

He is survived by one son, Robert Wendt of Omaha, NE; and longtime companion, Velma Heckrodt of Mt. Sterling.

Mr. Hamblin was a truck driver for over 48 years, most recently working for ANR Trucking in Decatur. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home.

Merle Edward Scott, 86, of Jacksonville died Monday, September 29, 2008, at Jacksonville Convalescent Center.

He was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Jacksonville, the son of Cordell and Pearl Wright Scott. He married Rosemary Lonergan on June 1, 1943, at the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville and she survives.

He is survived by two daughters, Dianne (husband, Marc) Steinberg and Janet (husband, Dan) Littig, both of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, January (husband, Brett) McCulloch of Jacksonville and Matt (wife, Barbara) Barton of Alton; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marie Crouse of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Charlie, Clarence, Virgil, Donald and Bob; and one sister, Margie Hurley.

Mr. Scott was a member of Church of Our Saviour. He was a tool and die maker by trade, and he and his wife started Scott’s Maytag and Bottled Gas in 1948, retiring from the appliance business in 1978. He had also been employed for ten years with Laundry Exchange, and was the owner of several coin laundries in the area. He was a member of Moose Lodge #865. Merle met his wife, Rosemary, of 65 years when they were in high school. He loved to hunt and was an avid conservationist, building bluebird houses and installing them around his farm ground, always making sure there was wildlife cover. According to his family, there was very little he could not fix-if something stopped working, you called Merle. To others he was known as the Maytag Man. Even after his retirement, people would load up broken appliances and bring them to his home to repair. He never said “no”.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of Our Saviour. A prayer service will be held 4:45 p.m. Wednesday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on West State Street in Jacksonville. Shirley A. Tucker, 75, of Jacksonville, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008 at her home.

She was born April 29, 1933, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Ralph “Peewee” and Emma Meyer Ervin. She married Keith Tucker on Sept. 10, 1950, in Gulfport, MS. and he preceded her in death on June 21, 1999.

She is survived by three daughters, Karen (husband, Dale) Wooldridge of Basalt, CO., Carol (husband, Jerry) Moody of Wentzville, Mo. and Sandra (husband, Phillip) O’Donnell of Minneapolis, MN.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Tucker was a homemaker and a proud mother. She was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and served on the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Thursday Morning Bible Study at Our Redeemer. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Shirley was still a Cardinals fan.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Opal Irene Wolfley, 88, of Lecanto, FL and formerly of Jacksonville, IL died Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at Seven Rivers Community Hospital in Crystal River, FL.

She was born July 16, 1920 in Williamson County, IL; the daughter of Troy and May Stanton Lane. She married Virgil M. Wolfley on August 9, 1946 in St. Louis, MO and he preceded in death on September 30, 2003.

She is survived by two sons, James Wolfley (wife, Gwendolyn) of Springfield and Virgil L. Wolfley (wife, Sookie) of Lecanto, FL; four grandchildren, Martin Wolfley (wife, Jane) of Liberty, MO, Stephanie Mitchell of Springfield, Kimmatha Opal Wolfley of Tampa, FL, and Andrew Wolfley of Lecanto, FL; two great grandsons, Benjamin and Jacob; four sisters, Helen White of Olathe, KS, Mavis Sedlak of Pharr, TX, Betty DeHeart of Desoto, and Dorothy Reynolds (husband, William) of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Troy Lane Jr., LaVerne Lane, Robert Lane, and Kenneth Lane, and two sisters, Marie Edwards and a sister in infancy.

Mrs. Wolfley worked as a cook for several area restaurants and as a designer for Barber Florist prior to retirement.

Alex Samuel Thomas Newman, 18, of Meredosia, died Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born January 20, 1990 in Jacksonville, the son of Randy Jay and Tammy Jo Seckman Newman.

He is survived by his parents of Meredosia; one sister, Kristi (husband, Josh) Burton of Bluffs; paternal grandparents, Larry Joe and Barbara Newman of Versailles; maternal grandparents, Eldred and Karen Ehlert of Meredosia; maternal great-grandmother, Mabel Alsup of Versailles; a nephew and godson, Brandt Burton of Bluffs; aunts and uncles, Doug and Iris Seckman, Anthony and Elizabeth Newman and Lisa Myers; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by an uncle, Richard A. Newman.

Mr. Newman was a 2008 graduate of Meredosia High School and was currently attending Illinois Welding School in Bartonville. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Neelyville and the Meredosia Volunteer Fire Dept. He enjoyed riding four-wheelers, hunting, sporting activities and listening to music. He was an avid Fighting Illini and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Neelyville, with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Meredosia. Clayton Harold Stephenson, 86, of Murrayville, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at Passavant Area Hospital.

He was born Dec. 1, 1921, in Pike County, the son of Roy G. and Ethal Flora Stephenson. He married Alberta Louise Winningham on May 5, 1941, in Bowling Green, MO. and she preceded him in death on June 8, 2008.

He is survived by two sons, Clayton Thomas (wife, Jeanne) Stephenson of Murrayville and Joseph Dwaine (wife, Patricia) Stephenson of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Clayton T. (wife, Tonya) Stephenson, Jr. of Manchester, Kim (husband, David) Hults of Petersburg, Larry E. Welch of Jacksonville, Jennifer (husband, Bruce) Anders and Joseph Michael (wife, Monica) Stephenson, both of Murrayville, and Johanna (husband, Chris) Fuller of Winchester; ten great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jack Stephenson of Florida. He was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas E. Stephenson; and one sister, June Cooper.

Mr. Stephenson was employed for 45 years with Doyle Plumbing and Heating, as an apprentice, journeyman, foreman, Vice-President and then President. He was a member of Brooklyn United Methodist Church, Local #137 Plumbers and Fitters, the Moose Lodge and the Elks Club. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army with the 8th Armored Division, and was a life member of V.F.W. Post 1379.

Howard L. Gutekunst, 76, of Jacksonville, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at his home.

He was born Oct. 17, 1931, in Jacksonville, the son of Lamar H. and Louise Holloway Gutekunst. He married Donna Thomas on June 16, 1957, in Jacksonville and she survives.

Mr. Gutekunst was a 1949 graduate of Jacksonville High School and then graduated from Illinois College. He was the owner of Acme Electronics in Jacksonville for over thirty years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Valley of Springfield Scottish Rite, a member of Henry Clampit Chapter of DeMolay, a 55-Year member of Harmony Lodge #3, A.F. & A.M., and was active in Zingabad Grotto. He had also received the DeMolay Legion of Honor Chevalier Degree. He was devoted to his farm and his farm animals. He showed a great concern for animals and plants and was a loyal visitor to many shut-ins. Howard was a very devoted husband.

Anna Margaret Mahoney, 91, of rural Ashland, IL died Saturday evening, September 20, 2008 at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia, IL.

She was born September 24, 1916 in New Berlin, IL; the daughter of Theodore and Alice Stapleton Meier. She married Richard Harold Mahoney on August 27, 1942 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Berlin and he preceded in death on September 25, 1996.

She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Rogers (husband, Richard) of rural Ashland; three granddaughters, Michele Fahey (husband, Andrew) of Springfield, Alicia Rawlings (husband, Matthew) of Springfield, and Angie Muller (husband, Wade) of Jacksonville; four great grandchildren, Brendan and Brigid Fahey and Matthew and Anna Muller; a sister, Alice Boarman (husband, Bill) of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sr. Mary Mercita and Mary Dullenty, and three brothers, Vincent Meier (surviving wife, Margaret of New Berlin), James Meier, and Joseph Meier.

Mrs. Mahoney was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and Springfield College in Illinois. She taught at country schools in Loami and Bluffs Springs and later substitute taught for many years in the Ashland and Pleasant Plains School Districts. She was a devoted member of St. Augustine Parish and its Altar Society. She enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her family and friends especially attending the many activities involving her grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland with burial at St. Augustine Cemetery, west of Ashland. She was born June 28, 1915, on the family farm west of Jacksonville, the daughter of Fred and Lucy Gordon Jewsbury. She married William L. Hadden on July 28, 1939, in New London, MO. and he preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1999.

She is survived by three daughters and one son, Nancy (husband, Darrell) Wynn, Robert (wife, Carolyn) Hadden, Jane Hadden and Jean (husband, Harold) Young, all of Jacksonville; eight grandchildren, Bev (husband, Steve) Goodey, Dale (wife, Amy) Hadden, Gary (wife, Lisa) Hadden, and Melissa (husband, Mike) Schildman, all of Jacksonville, David (wife, Peggy) Wynn of Loami, Kenny (wife, Susan) Hadden of Taylorville, Paul (wife, Kristen) Hadden of Chicago, and Scott (wife, Sarah) Young of Winchester; and seventeen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Claude, Harold, Clarence and Wilbur Jewsbury and one in infancy.

Mrs. Hadden was a graduate of Jacksonville High School and attended MacMurray Women’s College. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Jane Miller Group. She had been a member of Passavant Auxiliary and Home Bureau. She was an excellent cook and loved sharing her baked goods with others. She enjoyed watching University of Illinois basketball and St. Louis Cardinals games.

Fred Arthur Atwood, 66, of Meredosia, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 at his home.

He was born Oct. 13, 1941, in Watseka, the son of Andy and Leta Ferry Atwood. He married Anna Allen on Oct. 12, 1990, in Versailles, and she survives.

He is also survived by one son, Tyler (wife, Michelle) Atwood of Sheldon; two stepsons, Michael (wife, Karen) Garrett of Jacksonville and Allen Garrett (fiancé, Stephanie Barrett) of Martinsville, IN.; four grandchildren, Caleb and Lily Atwood, both of Sheldon, and Jason and Nicole Garrett, both of Jacksonville; one brother, Andy Atwood of Kankakee; and two sisters, Jean Anderson of Watseka and Kate Loveland of Iroquois. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Linda and Anita Atwood.

Mr. Atwood served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1964. He worked as a Road Supervisor for Illinois Valley Paving for the past 37 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He and his wife liked to travel, and often vacationed in Las Vegas and Mexico. He enjoyed hunting and watching westerns.

Verna E. Wagner, 82, of Jacksonville, died early Saturday, September 13, 2008, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 14, 1925, in Phoenix, AZ., the daughter of E.G. and Flora Wright Clark. She married Daniel H. Wagner on Feb. 10, 1945, in Abilene, TX. and he survives.

She is also survived by two daughters and three sons, Rosalyn (husband, Bill) Boston of Columbia, MO., Kittrell (husband, Rich) Strunc of Gilbert, AZ., Gary (wife, Margaret) Wagner and Clark (wife, Susan) Wagner, both of Jacksonville, and Craig (wife, Tammy) Wagner of Springfield; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Wayne (wife, Marilyn) Clark of Lake St. Louis, MO. and Richard (wife, Bette) Clark of Corpus Christi, TX.

Mrs. Wagner had worked over twenty years for General Telephone, retiring as a Supervisor. She enjoyed gardening and quilting. She loved raising her children and their friends.

Pauline B. Lindner, age 103, of Jacksonville, IL died Friday, September 12, 2008 at the Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

She was born July 15, 1905 In Denver, CO; the daughter of Herbert and Lulu Kitterman Bischof. She married Frank S. Lindner and he preceded her in death in 1965.

Pauline was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great great-grandmother and a woman of deep religious faith. She is survived by a son, H. Greig Lindner (wife, Geri) of Titusville, FL; a daughter, Margot Tooley of Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Stephen Lindner and Michele Marti (husband, Pete) all of Titusville, FL., Michael Tooley (wife, Brenda) of Mt. Vernon, IA, and Keila Fallon (husband, Lt. Col. Dan) of Edmond, OK; 16 grandchildren; a niece, Kathy Kowaski of Sabula, IA and a nephew, Father Paul Key (wife, Pat) of Tyler, TX.

Early in her career Mrs. Lindner taught in the Kansas Rural Public Schools prior to serving as Circulation Librarian for the Ft. Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. Later Pauline became interested in and an active investor in the stock market and managed a farm in Central Kansas.

She resided in Hays, KS for many years where her home was a welcome haven for area college students, friends and faculty members. She was known for her open door hospitality, cooking skills and positive attitude toward all of mankind. She relocated to Jacksonville almost 40 years ago living with her daughter Margot.

Ralph Jacob Wiebe, 86, of Springfield, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Corn, OK., the son of Jacob N. and Anna Sawatzky Wiebe. He married Lucille Stricklan, and they later divorced. He then married Gladys Ruth Hanley and she preceded him in death.

He is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Byus and Judy (husband, Bill) Beckman, both of Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Demaree (husband, Jerry) Lindsey of rural Jacksonville. Michael (wife, Deanna) Byus of Simpson, LA., Regina (husband, Bruce) Stubblefield of Florida and Shawn Beckman of Jacksonville; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Teeter of Foss, OK. and Doris (husband, Milford) White of Alva, OK.; his former wife, Lucille Hayes of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Dawn Beckman; one sister, Adeline Jones; and one brother, Alfred Wiebe (surviving wife, Barbara of Clinton, OK.)

Mr. Wiebe was a graduate of Clinton (OK.) High School, where he held a state track record for over 50 years. He later attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was an electrician working for Sieber Electric in Jacksonville, and then for the State of Illinois in Springfield. Mr. Wiebe was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Coast Guard, and was a member of I.B.E.W. Local 193 and the V.F.W. He enjoyed raising and racing Thoroughbred horses.

Patricia G. “Patt” Cline, 68, of rural Pleasant Plains, IL died Thursday evening, September 11, 2008 at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia, IL.

She was born July 12, 1940 in Cass County, IL; the daughter of Roy and Nellie Marcussen Conkey. She married William Franklin Cline on November 28, 1958 in Pleasant Plains and he survives.

She is also survived by two daughters, Janet Bennett and Karen Cline, both of Pleasant Plains; two sons, Franklin Cline (wife, Becky) of Jacksonville and Robert Cline (wife, April) of Timewell; seven grandchildren, Aaron (wife, Stephanie) and Joshua Bennett, Garrett, Logan and Ashley Cline, Morgan Fry, and Adam Dobson; a brother, Robert Conkey of Phoenix, AZ; four sisters, Ruth Clasing of Peoria, Marge Thompson of Litchfield, Alice Reiser (husband, John) of Ashland, and Mary Adams of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ray and John Conkey.

Mrs. Cline was a graduate of Chillicothe, IL High School. After raising her children, she was affiliated with the City of Virginia as City Clerk, bookkeeper, and secretary over 27 years. She also provided bookkeeping services for Roy French Construction, Briar TV, Wheelhouse TV, and her husband’s service station. She was a longtime member of Virginia United Methodist Church where she served on numerous committees. She was a formerly active with the Virginia BBQ and Cass County Home Extension.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Virginia United Methodist Church in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. She was born August 28, 1949 in Jacksonville, the daughter of John Hays and Betty Fox Hays. She married Bob McCollister on August 15, 1971 in Virginia, IL and he survives.

She is also survived by her mother, Betty Hays of Virginia; her father, John Hays (wife, Evelyn) of Jacksonville; two sons, Todd McCollister of Geneva and Marcus McCollister of Jacksonville; a brother, Alan Hays (wife, Jennie) of East Peoria; two sisters, Nancy Hall (husband, Jim) of Springfield and Margaret Germain (husband, Ed) of Indianapolis, IN; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. McCollister was a 1967 graduate of Virginia High School and a 1972 graduate of Illinois College. She served as an insurance clerk for the Bone-Scott Clinic in Jacksonville for several years prior to joining the Illinois Department of Employment Security where she has been employed as a revenue analyst for over 15 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville and Chapter I.O. of P.E.O. . She enjoyed cooking, needlework, and gardening in her spare time but her family and friends always remained her priority.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at the Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia with Rev. Kristie Peterson officiating. Mary Phyllis Smith, 72, of South Jacksonville, IL died Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

She was born March 22, 1936 in Tower Hill; the daughter of Charles and Ruby Hines Smith. She married Robert Smith and he preceded in death in 1989.

She is survived by a niece and nephew whom she raised in her home, Tami Powell and John Nance, both of Decatur; a sister, Judy Marshall of South Jacksonville; and a brother, John Nance of Decatur. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Smith was employed in many positions including waitress, bartender, convenience store clerk, and several years as manager of the Mason City Motel.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at the Jacksonville Assembly of God Church where the family will meet friends from 1:30 PM until the time of services. MARE ROSIE MAE JACKSON

Mare “Rosie Mae” Jackson, 57, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born Oct. 22, 1950, in Crenshaw, Mississippi, the daughter of Lucion and Artie Mae White Jackson.

She is survived by her parents of Jacksonville; five children, Kenneth (wife, Angela) Jackson, Mary Lisa Jackson, Charles Jackson, and Mary Ann (husband, Michael) Smith, all of Jacksonville, and Baretta Jackson of Indianapolis; thirty-four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four brothers and three sisters, Anna (husband, Clyde) Hart, Carrie Freeman, L.J. Jackson, Earl (wife, Karen) Jackson and Patricia Bates, all of Jacksonville, Mark McFarland of Kansas, and Michael (wife, Kim) Jackson of Pekin. She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother, Bertha Jackson, Eva Davis, Claudia Sykes and L.A. Jackson.

Rosie Mae was a member of Mt. Emory Baptist Church. She worked for Excel in Beardstown, and prior to that had worked for Pactiv, Howard’s Cleaners and ARC of Jacksonville. She loved playing cards, scratch-off lottery tickets, going to thrift stores, and her jewelry. She especially loved her grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Emory Baptist Church, with burial at Jacksonville East Cemetery. The family will meet friends noon-1 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Victor A. Petefish, 67, of rural Virginia, IL died Friday afternoon, August 29, 2008 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL as a result of injuries sustained in a farm accident.

He was born January 5, 1941 in Beardstown, IL; the son of William M. Sr. and Helen M. Ainsworth Petefish. He married Irene Schuldt Simmons on August 20, 1988 in Virginia, IL and she survives.

He is also survived by a son, David V. Petefish of Virginia; a daughter, Caroline Petefish of Springfield; a step son, Bill Simmons (wife, Paula) of Springfield; a step daughter, Cathy Judd (husband, Duane) of Springfield; three grandchildren, Ryan, Carson and Konnor Petefish, all of Canton; two step grandchildren, Elyse Simmons and Megan Judd, both of Springfield; a brother, William M. Petefish Jr. (wife, Judy) of East Peoria; a sister, Elizabeth Wiedman (husband, Scott) of Henry; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Petefish was a 1959 graduate of Virginia High School and attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He farmed in Cass County for many years and served on the Illinois Soybean Checkoff Board from 1996 to 2002. He was a Philadelphia Township Trustee and was a member and former deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia. He was a member of Virginia Lodge #544 AF & AM, Ansar Shrine, and Illinois Valley Shrine Club. An avid Fighting Illini football fan, he enjoyed history and traveling.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call after 3:30 PM Tuesday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:00 PM. David Ray Arnold, 73, of Meredosia, died Thursday, August 28, 2008, at his son’s home in Byron, IL.
David was born April 21, 1935, the son of Raymond and Florence Schuessler Arnold. He married Sue Ann Reining and they later divorced.

He is survived by a son, Randy Irvin Arnold (former wife, Betty) of Byron; three granddaughters, Bethney Dufoe (husband, Chris) and Amanda Arnold, both of Byron, and Kristina Arnold of Rockford; one sister, Anne Kerker (husband, Robert) of Augusta; two nephews, Steve James and Cliff James and families; special friend, Mary Rausch and her daughters, Allison, Angie, Kara, Patty and Mindy and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter in infancy, Leticia; a brother, Gene Arnold; and a nephew.

David was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea. He was a graduate of Bluffs High School. He retired from National Starch in Meredosia. He also worked for the railroad and helped on the family farm in Bluffs. He loved being with his family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Meredosia, with burial at Oakland Cemetery. The family will meet friends 2-3 p.m. prior to the service. Lucile Thomas, 99, of Jacksonville died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Barton Stone Home.

She was born Oct. 10, 1908, in Mt. Pleasant, IA., the daughter of George and Marie Wacker Alden. She married Jack Thomas on May 17, 1931, in Pekin and he preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1993.

She is survived by one daughter, Diane (husband, Larry) Larsen of Arlington Heights; two granddaughters, Amy (husband, Jim) Hempleman of Mt. Prospect and Sally (husband, Tim) Couture of LaGrange Park; and four great-grandchildren, Caroline, Jack, Emma and Ben.

Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker. She had attended Iowa Wesleyan College. For over 70 years, she had been an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, and had also been a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and Alpha XI Delta Sorority. The Jacksonville community benefited from her many philanthropic endeavors.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church, with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Margaret “Margie” Kleinlein, 75, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, after a lengthy battle with Multiple Myeloma at Passavant Area Hospital.

She was born Mar. 29, 1933, in Beardstown, the daughter of Harold Lowell and Hazel Dell Kuhlman Unland. She married Lloyd Kleinlein on Sept. 24, 1955, in Hernando, MS. and he survives.

She is also survived by one son and two daughters, Mark (wife, Ellen) Kleinlein of Simpsonville, S.C., Connie (husband, David) Staake of Staunton and Linda Johnson of Winchester; seven grandchildren, Casandra (husband, Ryan) Turner of Jacksonville, Scott (wife, Kristi of Greenville, S.C., Erin Kleinlein of Simpsonville, S.C., Daniel (wife, Stacey) Staake of Edwardsville, Kevin Staake and Brittany Staake, both of Staunton, and Evan Johnson of Winchester; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Caleb, Nolan, Nathan and Brady; one sister, Jean Hawkshaw of Meredosia; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Kleinlein was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed sewing and flower gardening. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Meredosia. Russell W. Hartz, 72, of Jacksonville died Monday, August 25, 2008, at Barton Stone Home.

He was born Feb. 19, 1936, in Scottville, the son of Lawrence and Opal Irene Mitchell Hartz. He married Mary Joann Baker on Oct. 26, 1956, in Jacksonville and she preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 2008.

He is survived by two daughters, Debbie (husband, Charlie) White of Jacksonville and Diana (husband, Randy) Howard of Winchester; three grandchildren, Jarrod Howard of Winchester, and Eren White and Bethany Howard, both of Jacksonville; and one great-granddaughter, Kira Morton-White; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Richard and Donald Hartz (surviving wife, Mary Jane.)

Mr. Hartz worked for Al’s Ready Mix in Jacksonville and MacMurray College for fifteen years before his retirement. He loved to camp and especially enjoyed listening to country music.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on North Prairie Street in Jacksonville, with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. William Allen “Bill” Mayfield, 92, of Jacksonville, IL died Sunday, August 24, 2008 at the Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.

He was born September 5, 1915 in Kansas City, MO; the son of William Madison and Jennie Rebecca Allen Mayfield. He married Jeroldine M. “Jerry” Marquart on August 25, 1946 in Chicago, IL and she preceded in death on April 13, 2005.

He is survived by a daughter, Katherine S. Mayfield of Lake Pleasant, MA; a son, Thomas E. Mayfield of Lakewood, CA; and two grandchildren, Heather Mayfield of St. Louis, MO and Aaron Mayfield of Lakewood, CA.

Mr. Mayfield was a 1938 graduate of Kansas State Agriculture College with a degree in electrical engineering. He served with the US Navy from 1942 to 1945. He resided many years in the St. Louis area where he was an electrical engineer with Sverdrup and Parcel of St. Louis, assisting in the construction of the Arch and the former Busch Stadium. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. While residing in the St. Louis area, he was a member of the Webster Groves Christian Church. After relocating to Jacksonville, he was a member of Central Christian Church and an active volunteer at the Barton W. Stone Home where he enjoyed delivering mail and newspapers to the residents.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held 10:30 AM, Friday, September 5, 2008 at the Barton W. Stone Community Room in Jacksonville where the family will meet friends from 9:30 AM Friday until the time of services. Committal rites will follow at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. Eleanor Mahoney, 90, a longtime Jacksonville resident, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at Winchester House in Libertyville.

She was born Dec. 27, 1917, in Jacksonville, the daughter of John and Ida Cruse Ehlert. She married Hamilton E. “Pat” Mahoney on Apr. 5, 1947 in Rockford and he preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1999.

She is survived by one daughter, Peggy Schreiner of Vernon Hills; and two grandchildren, Keith Schreiner of Neenah, WI. and Kim Schreiner of San Francisco, CA.
