Bernetta L. "Bernie" Hoagland, 73, of Jacksonville, IL died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. She was born Mar. 4, 1948, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Bern B. and Beulah V. Bryant Headrick. She married John W. Hoagland June 20, 1969, in Jacksonville and he preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 2011. She is survived by four nieces, Debra Richey, Tina (husband Tim) Hutchcraft, Sharon A. Six (partner Harold Ogle), and Lori Six; numerous great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews; her best friend, Becky Peacock; and her special furry friend, Gabby. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Geraldine F. Six; one nephew, James Six; and one niece, Tami L. Nelson (surviving husband Bill). Mrs. Hoagland was a 1966 graduate of Chester (IL) High School, and then graduated from Passavant School of Nursing in 1969. She later completed her BSN at University of Illinois at Springfield. She started her nursing career at Jacksonville State Hospital, then worked many years at Passavant Memorial Area Hospital in the ICU as Head Nurse. She finished her nursing career retiring from the Wells Center. Bernie was President of the Passavant School of Nursing Alumnae. She was also Past Corresponding Secretary of the Pilot Club. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, as well as many local clubs and organizations, including the Citizens Police Academy Alumni. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2021, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet friends 9-11 a.m. prior to the service. Due to COVID, masks are required. Memorials are suggested to PAWS or to Citizens Police Academy Alumni.
