Byron E. Buchanan, Sr., 98, of Jacksonville, IL, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, at Jacksonville Skilled Nursing and Rehab. He was born Jan. 12, 1924, in Pisgah, IL, the son of Curtis and Dorothy Dennis Buchanan. He married Eva Mae Hickey on Jan. 12, 1945, in Jacksonville, IL and she preceded him in death on Nov. 6, 1996. He later married Alleane Shipley Florence on Nov. 25, 2000, in Roodhouse, IL and she preceded him in death on June 9, 2018. He is survived by two sons and one daughter, Ron (Shirley) Buchanan of Hiram, GA, Caroline (Warren) Daniel of Homosassa, FL and Larry Buchanan of Greenville, IL; nine granddaughters; twenty-two great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; second wife; two sons, Jerry L. Buchanan (surviving wife, Grace of Sherman, IL) and Byron E. "Gene" Buchanan, Jr; five brothers, Harold, Ray, Wayne, Leroy and Paul; and two sisters, Opal and Betty. Mr. Buchanan was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during WWII. He had worked for Illinois Steel Bridge Company and Eli Bridge Company in Jacksonville, and later for Fiat-Allis in Springfield, retiring in 1985. He had attended Cornerstone Baptist Church in Winchester and Central Christian Church in Jacksonville. Funeral services for both Byron and Gene will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with burial and military honors to follow at Jacksonville Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am prior to the service at the funeral home.
