Daniel E. Thies, 78, of Jacksonville, IL, died Sunday, December 29, 2024, at his home.

He was born September 15, 1946, in Jacksonville, the son of Edward and Marie (Gardner) Thies. Dan married Jeanne Elizabeth Gregory on October 13, 1974, and she survives.

He is also survived by his children, Darren (Jenny) Thies of Missoula, MT, Sara Thies (Andrew Lorenz) of Jacksonville, and Cameron (Holly) Thies of Mahomet; and his grandchildren, Isaac, Liam, and Finneas Thies. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings.

Dan graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1964 and then from Illinois College in 1968. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam from 1968 – 1970. After coming home, he completed a Masters degree from Sangamon State, now University of Illinois Springfield.

Dan briefly worked as a social worker for DCFS, but his main occupation was a Veterans Service Officer for the central Illinois area. He was a Mason. Dan also enjoyed politics and antiquing at auctions.

Dan's wishes were to be cremated. A private burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to PAWS Jacksonville. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left online at buchanancody.com.
