Obituary

Doloris Jo Anne Lumpkins, 95, of Jacksonville, Illinois, died Thursday, March 12, 2026, at The Grove Health and Rehabilitation Center in Jacksonville.

She was born August 2, 1930, in Hartsburg, the daughter of Henry and Rose (Meyer) Dews, both deceased, of Chicago. Doloris had one sister, Maurita Nadene, with whom she shared childhood adventures with in Chicago. At the age of thirteen, she moved to Jacksonville with her sister, who attended the Illinois School for the Deaf. Her sister, Maurita, preceded her in death.

Doloris married Ernest J. Ankrom of rural Jacksonville on August 6, 1945. They had four sons, Reginald R. (Jane Lukeman) of Jacksonville; Everett Carroll (Carolyn Hansmeier) of Benton; Jimmy Wayne, deceased, (surviving wife, Jean Elliott of Jacksonville); and Michael Ernest (Janet Perkins) of Bellingham, WA. She was widowed at the age of twenty when Ernest died of polio on July 31, 1951. Doloris faithfully fulfilled her promise to him to keep their family together.

She later married William L. Lumpkins in 1954, and he preceded her in death in 1999. They had three children, Deborah Jones (Bob) of Temple, TX; and two sons, both deceased, Keith Leslie and Mark.

In 1995, Doloris retired after thirty-five years as a housekeeper from Passavant Area Hospital and then operated her small business cleaning houses.

Along with her children, she is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, thirty-six great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.

The family is grateful to the staff of The Grove Health and Rehabilitation Center and Transitions Hospice for their loving and dedicated care for Doloris during her three years of residence. They are also especially grateful to her roommate, Mrs. Pat Large, for her friendship with Doloris.

A visitation will be held from 10–11 AM Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Her great grandson, Pastor Jordan Ankrom of Farmington, MO, will conduct a funeral service at 11 AM, followed by interment at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, just south of Jacksonville.

Recalling Doloris's generosity to anyone who asked her for food or help, the family suggests memorial donations to be directed to New Directions in Jacksonville, a nonprofit homeless shelter and support center that provides emergency assistance to people with no place to stay.

The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left online at buchanancody.com.
