James Lee Noel, 77, of Ashland, Illinois, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2026.

He was the son of Harold and Betty (Summers) Noel. He married Loretta “Sue” Olroyd and they were married for fifty-eight years. She preceded him in death earlier this year.

He is survived by his siblings, Barb Macari and Harold ‘Snooks’ Noel and grandchildren, Samuel and Matthew Little, Kody Noel and Leah Russell.

He was preceded in death by his children, Kimberly and Dennis Noel; his wife, Loretta ‘Sue’; his mother, Betty; and his father, Harold.

James had a diverse career. He served as the mayor of Ashland from 1994 to 1997. He was also a firefighter with the Ashland Fire Department from 1993-2003 and worked as a union carpenter for 35 years .

James had a passion for collecting various items including coins, buttons, fishing equipment, and presidential memorabilia. He found joy in spending time at his cabin with his grandchildren, dogs, and his wife. He also cherished the moments he spent fishing with his mother on the dock. He spent many days going to the gun show, antique shopping, and yard sailing .

James was known for his humor and love of teasing his grandchildren.

Per his wishes, cremation rites have been rendered and no services will be held. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home is assisting the family with cremation. Condolences may be left online at buchanancody.com.
