Jessie Jean Cochran Cornelius, 104, a longtime Jacksonville, IL resident, went to be with God on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, at Shelbyville Manor surrounded by her family. Grandma was born March 22, 1917, at a farm home near Warsaw, IL to E.H. and Mildred Cochran. She married Francis "Kack" Cornelius on Nov. 8, 1940, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1983. She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Kay Stephens of Ashland; three grandchildren, John (Amy) Stephens of Wausau, WI, Anthony Stephens of Ashland and Cathy Stephens of Shelbyville; one great grandson, Josh Stephens of Shelbyville; and several nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Katherine and Mary; one brother, Hanson; and her son-in-law, Charlie Stephens. Jean graduated from Springfield Nursing Hospital in 1940 (now Springfield Memorial Hospital) where she worked as a Registered Nurse until she retired in the 1980s. She continued to work as a nurse until she was 92 years old, feeding patients and helping at various nursing homes in Jacksonville. She loved being a nurse and being called Grandma by everyone. She had a very special connection with her great grandson Josh. She had a great love for God and her church and was a long-time member of Literberry Christian Church until she couldnt attend any longer. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2022, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.
