Obituary

After more than 95 years with us, God gently called Joan home on November 1, 2022, All Saints Day, from her home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where she resided following her husband Allans death in 1991. Joan Adel Burns Landolt was born on March 11, 1927, to William Edmund Burns and Hazel Mae Waterhouse Burns, at their farm home outside Ashland, Illinois. She grew up in Virginia, Illinois, with her older sister, Mary Burns Mahoney, graduating from Virginia High School and attending St. Marys College, South Bend, Indiana. She married Allan Francis Landolt, a Notre Dame graduate, reared in Alhambra, Illinois, on June 9, 1949. Joan and Allan focused their lives upon raising seven children. Joan was foremost a woman strong in her Catholic faith, with a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was eager to serve others, while tirelessly running a household built on love, faith, solid education, and achievement. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many. Her sense of humor was infectious, and "Jo" left a trail of smiles behind her every encounter. Joan was also a musician, playing the piano, organ, and trumpet; her children loved to hear her play. She was an active civic and church volunteer and a founding member of the St. Marys Hospital Gift Shop in Decatur, Illinois. She was a Catholic Daughter of America and the leader of many service and recreational endeavors. Joan was a wellspring of grace, strength, and wisdom. She was fun. And she really hit her stride as a grandmother and great-grandmother. Joan was a passionate athlete long before womens sports were mainstream. She played tennis in her youth and college years, segueing to golf for the rest of her long life. She had many golf and bowling trophies on display in her home, but the Hole-in-One trophy from Papago Golf Club, Phoenix, Arizona, was her favorite. She welcomed any friendly competition, from pickup basketball and baseball games with her children and their friends, to Bridge or Duplicate Bridge with girlfriends, to Top Golf with her grand- and great-grandchildren. Joan loved Notre Dame football and womens basketball, as everyone in the neighborhood could see by her logoed socks, jacket, hat and dog leash. Her Notre Dame flag was flying high every game day. Joan is survived by seven children: Terry Landolt Bishirjian (Richard), Norfolk, Virginia; Kay Landolt Rountree (Bill), Rancho Mirage and Montrose, California; Allan Landolt (Linda Dillenbeck), Scottsdale, Arizona; Maura Landolt Spreen (Timothy), Virginia Beach, Virginia; Mark Landolt (Jennifer Lane-Landolt), Chicago, Illinois; Renee Landolt Huglin (Mark), Portland, Oregon; and Matthew Landolt, Good Shepherd Manor, Momence, Illinois. 13 grandchildren: Phillip Bishirjian (Angela); Maria Bishirjian Nelson (Brian); Don Rountree (Jayne); Kelly Kaufman; Bob Rountree; Jason Rountree; Kacey Ziegenfuss; William Spreen; Sydney Spreen Taylor (Christopher); Elliot Landolt; Anya Landolt; Luke Huglin; and Mari Huglin; three local great-grandchildren: Mia Bishirjian; Sophia Nelson; and Ulee Nelson; 24 West Coast great-grandchildren; and Nikki, her beloved Boston Terrier.
