Obituary

John R. Yates, 82, of Jacksonville, IL, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2024, at The Grove in Jacksonville. He was known for his ever-present, cheerful, helpful personality, sparkling blue eyes, infectious smile, and ever-present wink.

He was born in Springfield, on February 19, 1942, the son of John F. and Mary V. (Skaggs) Yates, being the last of their twelve children.

John is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family scattered across the country, including Robert L. (Rob) Yates of Springfield, Lee Strode of rural Cantrall, and Nancy (husband Bob) Johnson of Cheyenne, WY. He also leaves behind his life-long companion and best friend Russ Kerr, with whom he made his home. Tucker will miss massages and tummy rubs from daddy.

His work as a young man in Springfield included Castor's Grocery and S+H Green Stamp Store before joining the S.S. Kresge Company. He retired from K-Mart Corp. after 29 years of service in various capacities. He then was employed by EMI Music for 7 years and when the Jacksonville plant closed, John became a licensed massage therapist, working for Schippel Chiropractic and privately out of his home before retiring once again.

John was the consummate dancer all his life with a particular love for ballroom dancing and, more recently, the West Coast Swing. He shared his love of dancing by teaching classes at the local YMCA for a time. He also enjoyed his daily breakfast at local restaurants, and leisurely walking grocery aisles.

John was of the Protestant faith, having been a member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, but in recent years, he and Russ worshiped each Sunday with the Decatur Methodist Church via their television ministry.

A visitation with John's family will be Monday from 4 – 7 PM at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 AM. A burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield will follow at 11:45 AM.

Memorials in John's name may be made to local charities: New Directions, Jacksonville Food Bank, Prairieland United Way, or the Salvation Army.
