Joseph Maurice "Moe" Kunzeman, age 96, of rural Chapin, IL, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
He was born October 14, 1928, in Decatur, the youngest son of Russell and Mary Etta (Davidson) Kunzeman. Moe married Marian Evans of Quincy, on June 2, 1956, and she preceded him in 1976. He married Verna Nergenah of Chapin, on August 12, 1978, and she survives.
He is also survived by three children, Joe (Sue) Kunzeman, Nancy (Joe) Seccia, and Sarah (Bruce) Bechtel; and four stepchildren, Pam (Mike Carls) Royer, Roger (Naydene) Nergenah, Regina Nergenah, and Angie (George Stratton) Nergenah. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife; parents; brother, Dallas; stepson, Dale; and one great granddaughter, Reagan.
Moe grew up on a farm in rural Meredosia and graduated from Meredosia High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and attended Hardin Brown Business College in Jacksonville, after being discharged from the Army. He and his first wife, Marian, raised their family in Meredosia, and he worked in the office at Meredosia's National Starch and Chemical Co. as the office manager, eventually retiring in 1985. After his retirement, he and Verna farmed full-time, having moved to rural Chapin in 1981. They also traveled extensively with their camper van and boat throughout North America.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church located outside Chapin, and a lifelong member of the Meredosia American Legion. Moe served on the Meredosia-Chambersburg School Board for many years and was chief burgoo maker in Meredosia for a time. He enjoyed golf and bowling – participating in weekly leagues for many years. He was a member of the Meredosia Sportsmen Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He continued to hunt even in his later years – he was deer hunting in a tree stand on his 80th birthday!
