Mary Jayne Upchurch, 74, of Jacksonville, IL, died Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at her home. She was born Dec. 26, 1947, in Newcastle, IN, the daughter of William A. Upchurch and Mary List Alexander, and the granddaughter of Tom and Ethel Abbott Upchurch and George and Marie Weng List. She is survived by her daughter, Mary "Nova" Adams of Jacksonville; two grandsons, Trent Jackson and Ethan Cathers; one great granddaughter, Kinslee Jackson; three brothers and three sisters, Bill (Carol) Upchurch of Dayton, OH, Larry Paul Upchurch (Sandy) of Circleville, OH, Sue (David) Barber of Jacksonville, Peggy (Peter) Civilik of Oakham, MA, Rita (Bill) Vaniter of Jacksonville, and Harold Russell (Jackie) Hayes of Jacksonville; sister-in-law, Donna Hayes of Texas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Margaret Upchurch Marsh; one brother, Edward Hayes; and one sister-in-law, Carol Upchurch. Mary Jayne attended Jacksonville schools and finished her schooling in Dayton, OH. Upon her return to Jacksonville, she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse from Passavant School of Nursing. She worked as an LPN and retired from Jacksonville Developmental Center after 20 years of service to her clients that she loved so much. In her younger years, she was a model and was an entrant in the 1968 Miss Daytona Beach contest. She was an animal lover, enjoyed collecting memorabilia and celebrity autographs, and was an avid learner who could be found watching PBS and sharing her knowledge with others among many other things. A Celebration of Life gathering will be announced at a later date with burial at Asbury Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to PAWS of Jacksonville.
