Orval L. Abbey, 84, of Jacksonville, IL, died Saturday, July 1, 2023, at his home.

He was born December 18, 1938, in Hannibal, MO, the son of Humphrey Abbey and Nora Chatman. Orval married Ethel Rose DeCamp, and she survives.

He is also survived by his daughters, Tracey Abbey of Jacksonville and Jewell (Sylvester) Harper of Springfield; sons, Harlan Abbey (Ron Farmer) and Robert "Bob" Stambaugh, both of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Cedric (Angela) Abbey, Angel Abbey, Asia Mosley, Sylvester Harper Jr., Britney Harper, Regan Grimes, Coby (Net) Stambaugh, and Brandon (Toras) Stambaugh; a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and his sweet caregiver, Penny Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Gloria Faye Abbey Gordon and Clara Belle Abbey; and daughters, Beverley Tangman and Debbie Norton (surviving husband, Wayne Norton).

Mr. Abbey had served in the National Guard in the Carolinas. He retired from Whitaker Sanitation and later worked for the YMCA. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Jacksonville. Orval absolutely loved the Cubs and enjoyed watching NCIS and Western movies. He also liked to socialize and was very active in his church.

Cremation rites have been arranged and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations are suggested to the Prairie Council on Aging in Jacksonville.
