Richard Lee Massey, age 73, of Jacksonville, IL, died Thursday afternoon, August 19, 2021, in his home. He was born April 1, 1948, in Jacksonville, the son of Orval E. and Phyllis Carter Massey. He married Sharon Cruse on October 20, 1966. Though they later divorced, they remained close friends, and she survives in Petersburg. He is also survived by daughter, Angela (husband, Shane) Pierson of Jacksonville, daughter, Heather (husband, Greg) Carter of Springfield, son, Schuyler Bucher of Macomb; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Jim (wife, Shirley) Massey of Florence, AZ; and brother, David (wife, Jan) Massey of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Scott Massey; and sister, Janice Reeve.Mr. Massey graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1966. He later attended Lowry Air Force Base Technical Training Center in Denver, CO. Stationed at Kincheloe Air Force in Michigan, he served as United States Air Force Sergeant of Avionic Delivery System Maintenance Specialist where he enjoyed working on bomber planes and other tactical aircraft. During his time of service, Richard received the Air Force National Defense Service Medal, two Air Force Good Conduct Medals, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award. In addition to his pride in being a veteran, he loved watching movies and spending time with his family. A funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends 5-6 p.m. prior to the service.
