Vickie Jean Clayton

September 9, 1946 – August 8, 2026

Some people leave their mark through accomplishments and accolades. Vickie Jean Clayton left hers through something far more meaningful—the way she loved and cared for people.

Vickie passed away peacefully at home on August 8, 2026, surrounded by her loving husband and daughter. She was just one month shy of her 80th birthday.

Vickie was born September 9, 1946, in Jacksonville, Illinois, to Charles Hughes Reid and Dorothy Marie Boatman Reid. She grew up on her family's farm north of Jacksonville, a place that remained close to her heart throughout her life. She often spoke fondly of her childhood there and the memories of being raised on the farm.

On August 3, 1969, Vickie married James Wellington Clayton at Ebenezer Church in Jacksonville. Jacksonville remained home for Vickie and Jim, where they built their life together and raised their family. Over 57 years of marriage, they shared the ordinary and extraordinary moments of a life together, with family always at the center.

Vickie was an extraordinary daughter, a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, a treasured friend, and a woman of faith. She had one of those rare gifts that made people feel welcome from the moment they met her. She truly never met a stranger. Whether someone had known her for decades or had only just met her, Vickie had a way of making them feel seen, welcomed, and cared for. Helping others wasn't something she did for recognition—it was simply part of who she was.

As a young woman, Vickie enjoyed bowling and began her working years in the dental office of Dr. Ross Bradley. She later worked in the dental office of Dr. Robert Bradley before beginning a 20-year career with Dr. Peter Trace. Throughout her working years, Vickie formed many relationships and friendships along the way before retiring in 2002.

For more than 50 years, Vickie and Jim were members of Starlight Campground, where they spent countless happy days camping and boating. Those years brought many wonderful memories, friendships, and time together, and became a special part of the life they shared.

Her church and Sunday school family held a special place in her heart. Her faith, her friendships, and time spent with the people she loved brought her great joy. But more than anything, Vickie's heart belonged to her family.

Those who knew Vickie will remember much more than the milestones of her life. They will remember her kindness, her willingness to help, the way she could talk to anyone, the friendships she treasured, and the love she gave so freely. She was the kind of person who made others feel that they mattered.

Vickie is survived by her husband, James Clayton; her daughter, Amy Clayton; and three grandchildren, who were an important part of the family she loved so dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Hughes Reid and Dorothy Marie Boatman Reid; her brother, Charles Gail Reid; and two beloved granddogs, Passions and Lovely, who held their own special places in her heart.

A life like Vickie's cannot be measured simply by the number of years she lived. It is better measured by the people she loved, the lives she touched, the kindness she gave, and the memories she leaves behind.

She made the lives of those around her better simply by being part of them. Her kindness will continue through the people she loved, and her family will carry her with them always.

That is Vickie's legacy—a life filled with love, faith, friendship, and a heart that always had room for one more.

Private services will be held.
