Virginia "Gin" Frances Deitrick Delaney, 94, of rural Concord, IL, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville. She was born Feb. 19, 1928, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Edwin Hayden and Mary (Alderson) Deitrick of Concord. She married George W. Delaney in 1949, and he preceded her in death. Virginia graduated from the DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, the University of Illinois, and completed advanced graduate studies from Boston University in Boston, MA. She was a primary education schoolteacher for twenty-five years and began her career at the Meredosia Grade School, having also taught at Robinson, Joliet and Springfield, IL, San Diego, CA and Framingham, MA. In 1974, after moving with her husband to Lynchburg, VA, she became very active in the Lynchburg General Hospital auxiliary, and later became president of the Virginia Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. She also spent two decades as a volunteer at Lynchburg General Hospital. She and George enjoyed bird watching and taking cruises, and she visited Africa and the Amazon. She enjoyed the companionship of many dogs. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister, Marsha Jean Deitrick. She is survived by two sisters, Phyllis Ann Allen (deceased husband, George) and Marian McDonald (deceased husband, Bernard); one niece, Patricia Sample (Ed), four nephews, Jeffery Allen (Lisa), Leslie Allen (Sherry), Layne McGinnis, Shaun McGinnis (Christine); four great nieces, Melissa Suttles (Jason), Jessica McGath (Shane), Morgan Suttles, and Megan Suttles; six great nephews, Edwin Allen, Mitchell Allen, Matthew McGath (Cheyanne), Andrew McGath, Michael McGinnis and Steven McGinnis (Lauren); and three great-great nephews, Jameson McGath, Erik McGinnis and Eivin McGinnis. The family wishes to thank all staff and nurses at Heritage Health for her care, and also greatly appreciate Virginias care while on Memorial Home Hospice. Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023, at Concord Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Concord Cemetery.
